Bile Reflux Remedies

Bile Reflux Home Remedies

In a time where we have unprecedented access to medical services and pharmacological choices, there is still something to be said for considering home remedies or homeopathic approaches to treating issues such as bile reflux.

Even major Western medical professionals recognize that there are many sources of relief that can be found in nature.

For example, the Mayo clinic offers advice for those looking for bile reflux remedies.  They suggest that none of these have been found to completely relieve bile reflux, they do work to protect against some of its more painful and dangerous outcomes, such as esophageal inflammation.

  • Chamomile is the first bile reflux remedy that is suggested.  Chamomile has known anti-inflammatory properties, so it can help relieve discomfort caused when bile and acid reflux into the esophagus.
  • Licorice is also recommended by practitioners of both alternative and mainstream medicine.  It is used to soothe inflammation from a variety of digestive problems, but it can lead to certain unwanted side effects if taken long term.
  • Marshmallow, also called Althea officinalis, is used to provide relief from irritation caused when bile and acid reflux into the esophagus.

There are some other natural remedies that many people feel help with their bile reflux symptoms, so you may want to try them as well.

  • Drink lots of water.  Staying hydrated can help with bile reflux, and some sources recommend drinking warm or hot water before going to sleep at night to help reduce symptoms.
  • The herbal supplement Melissa Officinalis is also often indicated for digestive issues including gastritis, which can be caused by the reflux of bile into the stomach.
  • Triphala is also often recommended for these types of issues.  It has been found to help clean the gastrointestinal tract and to aid in overall digestion.
  • Strawberries, either the whole fruit or an infusion made from the leaves, is another natural remedy for bile reflux.  It is thought to strengthen the liver and to increase the metabolism.

It’s important to note that like all herbal remedies, those listed above can have interactions with over-the-counter and prescription medications.

It’s also definitely a good idea to make your doctor aware of any bile reflux remedy you intend to incorporate into your treatment plan.
